Special instructions
=============================

This release is intended for use with dL4 version 9.1 or later.

The DL4LUST and LUMAP environment variables should NOT be defined
when using the conversion utilities.


Installation instructions for Unix/Linux
========================================
1.  Login as the user that will be performing the conversion or as "root"
    if the conversion tools will be shared by multiple users.

2.  Copy the distribution file to any directory of your choice.  If logged
    in as "root" to perform a shared installation, copy the distribution file
    to /usr/lib.

3.  Select the directory from step 2 as the current directory using the
    command "cd directory".

4.  If the distribution file has a ".Z" extension, uncompress the file using 
    the command "uncompress filename.Z".  On Linux systems, use the command
    "gzip -d filename.Z".  If the file has an extension of ".z", rename the
    file with an uppercase "Z" before uncompressing the file.

5.  Unpack the distribution file using the command "cpio -imcduv <filename".
    If an error message occurs, try using the command "cpio -imduv <filename"
    or "cpio -imduvHodc <filename".

6.  Delete the distribution file or move it to a backup directory.

        xlatkeys            Subprogram to add index key filters to newly
                            created indexed contiguous files.  Programs that 
                            build indexed files should CALL this subprogram
                            with the channel number of the indexed file
                            after adding the indexes themselves.  Example:

                                CALL "xlatkeys",ChannelNumberOfFile

                            The filenames and key filters must be defined in
                            the text file "/usr/lib/dl4/tools/xlatkeys.def".
                            The format of the file is documented in the
                            xlatkeys program.
        xlatkeys.bas        dL4 source file for the xlatkeys subprogram.

Jul 23 2010 (Maintenance Release 1.8.1)

o   When converting programs, source text files are now masked to 7-bit ASCII
    since IMS source files sometimes have the high bit incorrectly set.  The
    source file character set can be changed, if necessary, by modifying the 
    "charset=xxxx" value in the IMSSAVE program.

Jun 23 2009 (Release 1.8)

o   IMS2DL4 now uses dL4 9.1 features to improve IMS compatibility.  This
    release of IMS2DL4 should only be used with dL4 9.1 or a later release.

o   IMS structure definitions and references are converted to dL4 format.

o   IMS2DL4 now supports converting IMS Dynamic Bitmapped Index files (".r"
    and ".x" extensions).

o   IMS2DL4 now converts large IMS files to dL4 Huge files.

o   CALL IMSChstat() now returns the name of the "CHAINed from" program if
    one exists and the current program is not inside a CALL-by-filename.

o   CALL $CHSTAT is now converted to CALL IMSChStat() instead of CALL ChStat()
    to improve compatibility with the IMS CALL $CHSTAT routine.  If CALL
    IMSChStat() is used inside a CALL-by-filename, the caller parent name will
    be returned instead of the SWAP parent name.

o   CALL DynWind(), the equivalent of IMS CALL $WINDOW, now disables scrolling
    in any newly created window for compatibility with IMS.

o   CALL IMSChkChnl() now accepts an optional mode parameter.

o   Behavior change: if a bad link is found in an indexed file free chain,
    IMS2DL4 now completes the conversion and displays a warning message.  In
    previous releases, such a file was not converted and an error message
    was displayed.

o   IMS2DL4 now converts the following CALLs to new intrinsics:

      CALL 10 to CALL IMSCheckDigits()
      CALL 11 to CALL IMSCheckNumber()
      CALL 22 to CALL SplitStr()
      CALL $PARSE to CALL SplitStr()
      CALL $REDIR to CALL Redir()

o   CALL $INPEDIT, CALL $INITBUF, CALL $READBUF, and CALL $WRITEBUF are
    now converted to dL4 equivalents.

o   The language dialect option now selects IMS1 instead of IMS to enable
    calling "dl4error" when errors occur as a replacement for V_ERR.

o   Bug fixed: non-large Dynamic Bitmapped Index files could not be converted.

o   Bug fixed: source-to-source conversions did not work.

Jan 18 2006 (Maintenance release 1.7.3)

o   CALL XMODEM() now supports a log file for debugging file transfer 
    problem.  Please examine the comments for CALL XMODEM() in imscalls.bas
    for details on how to enable the log file.

o   Bug fixed: IMSSAVE did not work in command line mode producing single
    line converted programs.

o   Bug fixed: CALL XMODEM() sometimes failed when transferring binary files.

Aug 13 2003 (Maintenance release 1.7.2)

o   CALL $PACK and CALL 81 are now converted to CALL IMSPACK().  Using
    CALL IMSPACK() requires dL4 version 5.2.1 or later.

o   Bug fixed: some bit mapped files could not be converted because of an
    "Unexpected value at start of bit-map block" error.

o   Bug fixed: CALL SCRDUMP("filename") did not work.

Feb 11 2003 (Maintenance release 1.7.1)

o   Bug fixed: if bit mapped files were converted without the "/U" option,
    the number of records in use was incorrect.

Jan 14 2003 (Release 1.7)

o   CALL 24 is now converted to CALL IMSCLOSEALL() to close all open channels.
    Previous versions of IMS2DL4 converted CALL 24 to CALL VERIFYDATE().  The
    old behavior, if desired, can be restored by editing the file 
    "imsconvert.prf".

o   CALL $RDFHD, CALL 97, CALL $VOLLINK, and CALL 91 will now be converted to
    the proper intrinsic CALLs.

o   A new utility subprogram, "xlatkeys", has been added to define key filters
    in newly created indexed contiguous files.  Programs that build indexed
    contiguous files should CALL this subprogram with the channel number of 
    the indexed file after adding the indexes themselves.  Example:

        CALL "xlatkeys",ChannelNumberOfFile

o   Behavior change: either the file /usr/ims/filters or the file
    /usr/lib/dl4/tools/xlatkeys.def will be used as the source of index
    file filter definitions.  If /usr/ims/filters exists, it will be
    the sole source of filter definitions.

o   Bug fixed: polyfiles could not be converted and caused a runtime error.

o   Bug fixed: indexed contiguous files that had blocks extending beyond the
    logical file size recorded in the file header could not converted.  The
    utilities will now accept such files if the blocks fit within the 
    logical file size rounded up to a multiple of the block size.

Sep 12 2002 (Maintenance release 1.6.3)

o   Bug fixed: large (one million records or more) indexed contiguous files
    could not be converted because the converter entered an infinite loop.

Aug 16 2002 (Maintenance release 1.6.2)

o   The conversion profile, imsconvert.prf, now includes definitions for
    CALL 44, CALL 45, CALL 90, CALL $CALLSTAT, CALL $CHSTAT, CALL $COPY,
    CALL $EDITOR, CALL $IOCTL, CALL $RAWREAD, CALL $SCRDUMP, CALL $SETRAW,
    and CALL $XMODEM.  The conversion profile also adds the following line
    at the beginning of each converted program to enable IMS behavior:

o   The IMSXFER utility now supports conversion of files using Y2K key
    filters for two digit years.  The utility copies the key mapping
    information into the header of the converted file.  The utility
    reads the file "/usr/ims/filters" for mapping definitions or uses
    the file specified in a "/F=file" command line option.

o   Bug fixed: bit-mapped indexed contiguous files from big-endian systems
    were not converted correctly causing incorrect allocation of new records.

o   Bug fixed: some older indexed contiguous files were not converted 
    correctly.

o   Beta (1.6.1.3) Bug fixed: bitmapped indexed contiguous files were not 
    converted correctly.

Apr  1 2002 (Release 1.6)

o   The conversion status displayed during data or program file conversion
    has been improved.

o   A "/N" option has been added to IMSSAVE to convert only text files that
    use a line number on the first source line.

o   The temporary file names used by the conversion programs have been
    renamed to use a prefix of "ims2dl4" to avoid collisions with permanent
    files.

o   Fix bug: indexed contiguous files with a block size greater than 1024
    bytes sometimes caused a runtime error during conversion.

o   Fix bug: the error number printed after a conversion runtime error was
    sometimes incorrect.

Mar 22 2002 (Release 1.5.4)

o   When using the "/U" option to convert indexed contiguous files, report
    and skip any keys that point at non-existent records instead of aborting
    with a "System error".

o   Support the "[CallByFilename]" conversion profile feature of dL4 5.1 
    which can convert ENTER statements in subprograms to dL4-style array
    parameter notation ("[]").
    
o   Improve input prompts in IMSSAVE to check if the paths exist.

o   Delete IMSSAVE temporary files when IMSSAVE exits.

Mar 14 2002 (Release 1.5.3)

o   Convert indexed contiguous files that contain only keys rather than
    reporting "bit-map header info is corrupt".
