Wednesday February 14, 2007 Passport for Windows 2.8.1 Maintenance Release All Rights Reserved. Copyright (c) 1997 - 2007 by: Dynamic Concepts, Inc. Aliso Viejo, CA 92656 USA Email address: techsupport@dynamic.com Information: www.unibasic.com Downloads: ftp.dynamic.com General instructions ==================== o The FExxxxxx licenses used by Passport 1.6 and earlier versions are now obsolete and must be replaced. If software licensing is used, it will be necessary to determine the system license number before obtaining an SSN. The license number can be displayed by selecting "Programs" -> "Passport" -> "Display Software License Number" from the "Start" menu. The software license number and the old license information will be displayed in a warning box whenever SSNMAINT is run with an obsolete license number or method. Software licensing can be used with any version of Windows 98/ME or Windows 2000/XP/2003 or Vista. To use software licensing with Windows NT, service pack 4 or later must installed. o Problem reports should be emailed to techsupport@dynamic.com. All problem reports should contain a description of the problem, the operating system type (Windows 98/ME or Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 or Vista), and, if at all possible, a reproducible sequence to duplicate the problem. o Please visit our web site at www.dynamic.com for lists of known problems and common questions. Installation instructions ========================= To install Passport for Windows, run the program 1B_passpt_2.8.1.exe (or whatever filename you have copied it to) and follow the displayed instructions. If you are using a HASP hardware Passport, do not install the Passport device until the Passport software has been installed. If you never intend to use HASP hardware Passports on your system and you do not want to install the HASP drivers, use the command line option "-nohasp" when running the installation program. New in This Release ================================================================ Feb 14 2007 (Maintenance Release 2.8.1) o Add support for Vista systems. o Bug fixed: demo licenses that expired on July 1, 2007 or October 1, 2007 could not be used and always reported a license expired error. Aug 24 2006 (Release 2.8) o The SSNMAINT and SSNCMD utilities now have "Reset License" commands to rebuild software license data. These commands should only be used after a "license data is corrupted or doesn't match system" error has occurred such as on a system where all of the network cards have been replaced. o Support additional SSN demonstration modes. o Passport now installs a service on Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows 2003 systems. The service, passserv.exe, is automatically installed and removed when Passport is installed or removed. The service can be manually installed or removed by running passserv.exe with the argument "install" or "remove": passserv install passserv remove Apr 17 2006 (Maintenance Release 2.7.1) o Support installation on x64 (64-bit) Windows operating systems. In this release, USB and parallel port Passport devices are not supported on 64-bit versions of the Windows operating system. Nov 19 2004 (Release 2.7) o Allow a single dL4 SCOPEC user in demonstration mode without an SSN. Any such session will be terminated without warning after an hour. o Reduce reboot messages after installation on Windows NT. Oct 4 2004 (Release 2.6) o The Passport installation program now recognizes two new command line options to support automated installation. The "/s" (or "/S") option selects silent installation without any display or user input. The "/path " option can be used with or without the "/s" option to change the default installation directory (normally "\Program Files\Passport" on the system drive). The installation directory path can contain spaces, but the path should not be enclosed in quotation marks. Examples: 1B_passpt_2.6.exe /s /path C:\Program Files\Passport 2.6 1B_passpt_2.6.exe /s /path D:\Passport /nohasp o The Passport installation now creates a new text file, "install.txt", in the Passport installation directory to log the installation time and options. o The "nohasp" command line option can now begin with either a dash or a slash ("-nohasp" or "/nohasp"). Sep 3 2004 (Release 2.5.1) o Improve performance of new software licensing method. Aug 30 2004 (Release 2.5) o A new software licensing method has been implemented to improve licensing stability on systems with multiple network interfaces or wireless connections. The new method may generate different license numbers than the old method on systems with multiple network interfaces. While the new licensing method is preferred, the old method will be used with existing SSNs if needed for license number compatibility. o A command line option, "-nohasp", has been added to the installation program to skip installation of the HASP hardware Passport drivers. This option should only be used when recommended by the Dynamic Concepts Software Support department. Apr 23 2004 (Release 2.4) o Add new utility, ssncmd.exe, to allow display and modification of licenses in a command line (non-graphical) environment. o Support new user limit values. Dec 17 2003 (Release 2.3) o Support Windows 2003. o Add OSNMAINT utility to add or delete OSNs. Feb 21 2003 (Release 2.2) o Support new HASP hardware Passport devices. o Beta fix: eliminate long delays and excessive CPU time use when loading several processes simultaneously. Mar 18 2002 (Release 2.1.5) o Add explanatory message box for systems that have obsolete FExxxxxx licenses. o Reduce software licensing hardware sensitivity. Dec 4 2001 (Release 2.1.4) o Support DynamicXport and reduce software licensing hardware sensitivity. Nov 12 2001 (Release 2.1.3) o The number of extra ports (phantom or window ports that are not counted against the licensed user limit) has been increased from two to three. Two additional SCOPEW sessions are allowed for support purposes when using dL4 version 3. o A "-l" option has been added to the ssnmaint utility to display the software license number without modifying the current SSN. The command "ssnmaint -l" will display the software license number in a special dialog and will not display the SSN maintenance dialog. Sep 24 2001 (Release 2.1.2) o Bug fixed: if a system had multiple users with different login ids, only one user was allowed to execute a licensed product. Sep 19 2001 (Release 2.1.1) o Add support for software licensing of Windows NT 4 systems. The systems must have service pack 4 or later installed. o Bug fixed: a "Maximum user count exceeded" error was sometimes reported when the user count had not been exceeded. Sep 17 2001 (Release 2.1) o New release to add new hardware and software license methods. Hardware licensing uses a Dynamic Concepts Passport device attached to a serial port. Software licensing requires that the licensed system have a network interface card. Replacing the network interface card will invalidate the license and require a new SSN. This new version of Passport for Windows enforces the license user limits. All existing FExxxxxx licenses are now obsolete and must be replaced before using Passport 2.1. If software licensing is used, it will be necessary to determine the system license number before obtaining an SSN. The license number can be determined by running the SSNMAINT utility, selecting software licensing, entering a null SSN, and then clicking the "Test" button. The utility will display the system license number as part of the "license number doesn't match" error message. May 1 2001 (Release 1.6) o New release to support DynamicXport. Sep 14 1999 (Release 1.5) o New release to install Passport as a common group if possible. The range of expiration dates for demo SSNs has been extended until the year 6000. Mar 20 1998 (Release 1.4) o New release to support OSN (OEM Security Number) based program protection in dL4 3.1. A new utility, makeosn.exe, has been added to create OSNs which enable the execution and/or listing of dL4 PSAVE protected programs. A PDN is required to use makeosn. Please contact the DCI Sales department for information on how to obtain a PDN. Existing PDNs for Unix can be used with makeosn for Windows 95/NT. The makeosn utility is similar to makeosn in Unix UniBasic/Passport, but differs in the handling of PDNs (Product Description Numbers). The Unix makeosn utility stores and reads a PDN from a file in the "/etc" directory. The Windows 95/NT version of makeosn never writes the PDN to a file. The user may, however, create a text file containing the PDN. This file can be specified as a command line argument to makeosn ("makeosn filename") or placed in the same directory as makeosn.exe and named makeosn.pdn. If multiple PDNs are used, both makeosn.exe and makeosn.pdn can be copied/renamed to "ProductName.exe" and "ProductName.pdn" Because a PDN must be kept secret and Windows file systems are generally insecure, PDNs should either be reentered whenever makeosn is used, stored on a file on a diskette, or stored on a physically secure non-networked Windows system. Apr 16 1997 (Release 1.3) o First general release. Notes ===== o Passport for Windows attempts to monitor the licensing restriction on the number of concurrent users, however, it is still the license holder's responsibility to ensure that the installation complies with all of the terms and conditions of the licensing agreements for any products activated by this software. o Passport for Windows cannot be used with Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.
